I never have a grill or a pit, just a fireplace. I want to cook on it. Any suggestions of what and how?

wrap onions in tinfoil and stick in fire for 1 hour
very same with carrots and onions cut in large pieces and wrap
onions alone whole
carrots onions and potatoes diced large pieces
