A pellet basket is a metal basket that sits inside a woodstove and burns wood pellets eliminating the need to have for electric and all-natural gas. Pellet baskets are a decrease-expense alternative to pellet stoves.
Basically place the basket in your wood stove, fill it with wood pellets, light the pellets with gel firestarter. Add a lot more pellets, when required. Scoop the hot pellets to one side with a metal scoop, add new pellets next to the hot pellets. The hot pellets will ignite the new pellets. Constantly adjust your flue for a protected working temperature.

I had 1 for a although.
It burns about a bag a day, and heats the area fine, but not considerably else. I went back to my wood stove to heat my complete house.
The pellet stove was clean and worked nicely.
The flame was OK to watch.

For me, wood pellets are more accessable than cord wood this winter. I really didn’t want to spend the money(~$2000+) on a pellet stove that would then require electricity(200watts/hr) to heat my home. That would defeat the whole purpose of burning wood/pellets.
    I purchased the smaller insert.

I tried just filling the basket with pellets, pouring gel on top, lighting it, and walking away. I usually had to relight 2-3 times. All the heat rises and is lost. I tried the gel on the sides and top. This worked better but used much more gel than I wanted.

My wood stove has an optional 30watt fan to push warm air out. Fan only works when temp has reached a certain point. Basket + Pellets + gel = 1.5hrs before fan would turn on.

What works best for me: Pellets and 3, 2″Ø pieces of wood.

    Basket + Pellets + 2″ wood + gel = 10min before fan turns on.
I fill the basket 3/4 of the way. I place 2 pieces of wood on top of the basket. I also place a piece up front. I pour a line of burn gel on the pellets and then ignite.
The wood ignites, traps the heat on the pellets, and the pellets burn evenly.

This will have a good burn for 2.5 hours. The pellets burn on top, the sides and surprisingly, the bottom. The heat is hot and intense for the 2.5 hrs.

The wood creates hot/long lasting embers inside and around the basket.

The embers are key. When the flames die down, I only need to throw in another scoop of pellets to sustain a fire.

I live in wyoming. Shipping took three business days.

I own a VC Acclaim wood stove and so far the pellet basket works wonderfully! I set the wood stove on the low settings and a basket full of pellets will easily keep my stove warm for up to 8 hours or more. I fill it at night when I go to bed and in the morning it is still hot. Great product.

  3. I wish that I had bought either a corn-burning stove or else just an old-fashioned wood burner.
When the temperature is in the low twenties or colder, I burn about a bag and a half to two bags of pellets a day, and sometimes need the furnace for backup. (I have a hundred year old house and live in a cold climate.)
It is a lot cheaper than the gas furnace, and is a steady heat, not the on off on off on off of a furnace.

  4. they are fairly efficent ,but a coal stoker stove that burns rice coal is just about as twice as efficent.i considered buying a pellet stove ,i changed my mind and bought an alaskan coal stoker stove.a few of my frinds had pellet stoves and after seeing how well mine heated they switched to coal stokers. coal has a greater btu value than wood.
